Brush Techniques for Chinese Calligraphy Clerical Styles: Round vs Angular Brushstrokes

Friday, July 27th, 2012

top chinese calligraphy 書法三個基本要素: 用筆、結構和章法。用筆之法有”方”"圓”之分。The secrets of creating numerous Chinese calligraphy styles are mainly about brush techniques, structures of characters, and the layout of characters in a work. Brush techniques for Chinese calligraphy can be summarized as round brushstrokes, angular brushstrokes, a combination of both with different percentages, and etc.

The statements in this video are deductive; they cannot cover all the creativity, broadness, and aesthetics of Chinese calligraphy styles if viewed literally. While inductive reasoning argues from the particular to the general, deductive reasoning argues from the general to a specific instance. For example, the word “duration” in the annotations may help a practitioner to understand that the ink tonalities, writing speed, length of each strokes, the nuances between the percentages of round and angular brushstrokes are all related to time (duration).

Chinese calligraphy lessons: 13. Paper

Saturday, July 21st, 2012

top chinese calligraphy I this lesson, I talk about paper.

The primary factor that influences writing is the writer. However, paper that is designed to be used in this context will make it easier.

Xuan (宣) paper is most popular, traditional, and prestigious. I recommend single-ply unsized or half sized xuan paper for both practice and presentation.

Xuan City: Hometown of Chinese Calligraphy / Painting Four Treasures Part 1 (Brush making processes)

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012

top chinese calligraphy The Xuan writing brush, together with the famous Xuan paper, is made in Jing County, Anhui Province. In ancient times, Jing County was under the jurisdiction of Xuanzhou Prefecture, where the product got its name.
Scholars of the Jin Dynasty (256-420) were especially fond of the Xuan brush. During the Tang (618-907) and Song (960-1279) dynasties, Xuanzhou became a writing brush manufacturing center, and the Xuan brush was listed as a tribute to emperors. At that time, folk artisans made a breakthrough in craftsmanship in selecting materials and polishing the shaft. Brushes were both sharp and neatly cut, and plump and smooth at the tip, enabling artists to write and paint freely. The Xuan brushes, made elaborately from brownish rabbit hair, are considered to be the best and come at a very high price.
Because of wars in the Song Dynasty, brush makers moved out of Xuan City toward the south as a consequence, Hu Zhou brushes also became very famous.

Different styles of Chinese calligraphy http://www.art-virtue.com/styles/

It’s not necessary for a Chinese calligraphy teacher / student and a Mandarin Chinese teacher/student to teach or learn various styles of Chinese calligraphy and 異體字 (variant Chinese characters) unless one is determined to master Chinese linguistics, calligraphy, sinology, seal carving, and/or etymology ( 文字學 ). Please understand that no one is able to memorize all those variant versions of Chinese characters in different calligraphy styles and this video only includes some portion of the different versions of a character and is not intended to confuse a beginner when learning Chinese. The different versions of characters and their brushstroke methods are usually good sources of learning Chinese history and calligraphy and their related subjects.

To search for a specific Chinese character, please use ” Free Chinese Calligraphy Dictionary from www.9610.com ”

山 mountain (Pinyin: shan1)
The styles included in this video are 大篆, 小篆, 隸書, 行草書, and 楷書 and are mostly arranged in chronological order.

Why do Chinese people call Chinese scripts “Chinese characters or Hanji” but not “Chinese symbols?” http://www.art-virtue.com/introduction/

Chinese Calligraphy Scroll (High Definition) – Peace Love Joy 和平愛喜 with Signature

Wednesday, June 6th, 2012

top chinese calligraphy Reissued in High Definition with additional part of adding recipient’s name and artist’s signature. Chinese Calligraphy Scroll “Peace Love Joy (和平愛喜)”

Writing “Peace Love Joy” in cursive and semi-cursive Chinese calligraphy for Katia from Russia during a Chinese music concert of Master Betty Zhang in McKinney Performing Arts Center in Texas. The writing was done on a pre-mounted blank scroll with printed dragons in light gold. Though the pre-mounted blank scroll can sometimes be wrinkled due to handling, the wrinkles can be removed with an iron. Like music performers trying to play correct notes, writing on a pre-mounted scroll can be risky since the Chinese ink cannot be changed. So I humbly asked the audience to understand and be as quiet as possible to avoid any distraction; otherwise, I lose the money and the scroll if a single stroke or any artistic detail has disappointed me.
First two characters ( 和平 ) mean peace; third ( 愛 ) love; last ( 喜 ) joy.

Chinese calligraphy lessons: 12. Brush pens

Monday, May 28th, 2012

top chinese calligraphy Here I talk about brush pens, their merits, and deficiencies compared to normal brushes. Brush pens are basically brushes with ink reservoirs and caps. The concept is good, but the execution is often bad. Brush pens’ writing quality is far below that of normal brushes. For now, students of calligraphy should still use normal brushes.

Li Shu 隸書 Chinese calligraphy sample lesson #2 (why prefer older rubbings?)

Saturday, May 19th, 2012

top chinese calligraphy Original rubbings ( 原拓 ) from steles of Chinese calligraphy models are always preferred by well-trained Chinese calligraphers and teachers. The shape, structure, spirits of each characters as well as nuances are well kept; however, due to aging and Acts of God, steles deteriorated over the years and the calligraphy needs to be deciphered, understood, and analyzed for practice or appreciation.
