Male button quail plucking own feathers out?

I have 4 chinese painted tail quails (button quails). One male and 3 females. They are in a big enclosure, and eat very well and a varied diet. The problem is that the male has no feathers on his back and the skin at the top of his neck is yellow. He is definitely plucking the feathers out on his own. The others are definitely female as they are all laying eggs. And he is the boss in the enclosure. Apart from his feathers he seems perfectly happy little bird.
He is definately doing it himself! i watch him doing it. Ill take this advice. thanks

First .your bird may have feather mites?you need to spray him with a solution of T.C.P.Diluted 2 tablespoons to 1 pint warm water or pro rata and the hens.
This will help get rid of any Mites and stop any infection from him pecking him self, you could get Mite spray but I believe my method to be safest.
It is not normal for a Quail to pull out its own feathers, one or more of the hens must be doing this and he is pecking at the irritation caused by them doing it.
Do you supply them with plenty fine Grit do they have a fine Sand bath a tray or some where you can put some fine sand for them to bathe ?
Having bred hundreds of these birds, this is the only reason and solution I can give you,for this happening.

I know that when parrots are bored they pluck their own feathers out. I also know that there is a diesease that birds can get that causes them to lose their feathers. Try bringing the poor little guy to the vet and also include more chances for him to ecercise each day. Hope this helps.

He’s bored. birds pluck there feathers or clean then so much they fall out. so try changing there toys around some times to keep it interesting or hiding food abit so they have to work to get it. it also dose a wonder for mental stymulas in birds :D

it could be a few things. If there is not enough enrichment in the enclosure they may be bored. The females may be doing it. The bird may be stressed if it cant get to the females. Or maybe another female is actually a male and see it as competition.

    hope this helps :)
